Egypt has a well known climate. It is a hot, sandy, sunny place. Most of Egypt is desert, which means most of it is uninhabited by man. The area in Egypt where most of the people live is around the water. These places are along the Nile, at the mouth of the Nile (which is made up of many small rivers), and along the Mediterranean Sea.

It does not rain much in Egypt. In some places (the desert, for example), it may only rain 2-3 times a year, while in places like Alexandria, a city in Egypt situated at the mouth of the Nile river, it may rain 4-5 times a month. The amount of rainfall also depends on the time of year, because it tends to rain more during winter than during summer.
There are many types of animals living all over Egypt. These include camels, cats, crocodiles, frogs, fish, the adorable fennec foxes, heron (a type of bird), hippos, horses, donkeys and lizards. The camels, donkeys and horses would have all been used for travelling in Ancient Egyptian times. As well as animals, Egypt has many plants. They include small trees, succulents, papyrus reed and crops such as barley.

The Nile provides for the Egyptian people in many ways. It is one of their main sources of water, others being the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea. In Ancient Egyptian times the Nile flooded once every year, which fertilized the soil making it ready for planting crops. The Nile is also a handy way of travelling between North and South Egypt. The Ancient Egyptian people used many different types of boats to sail the Nile River. These included boats made from papyrus, wooden boats, cargo ships for trade and even special funeral boats.

Surrounding the Nile are two areas - the black land and the red land, as they were named in Ancient Egyptian times. The black land is the area right next to the Nile and is well fertilized. The red land is the vast area of desert. These two areas both influenced the Ancient Egyptian way of life. The black land is where the people grew all their crops and where their animals grazed, giving them their vast majority of food. The red land, which was all the desert surrounding Egypt, protected them from intruders, and provided them with a perfect area to build their pyramids.
